HALITOSIS= BAD BREATH
Welcome to Prodental the only and leading Argentine clinic
for the treatment of halitosis.
Halitosis is a very common affliction suffered by many people,
it can affect the young, old, rich, poor, kings, judges, workers,
teachers – everyone! It does not distinguish between
age or sex, even children as young as 5 years old can suffer
from it.
During the first step of our halitosis treatment procedure
we will measure your breath using a halimeter. Then our multi-disciplinary
team will diagnose the specific halitosis condition that you
may have. This will involve analysis and examinations by the
disciplines of gastroenterology, bacteriology, ENT (ear, nose
and throat) stomatology and molecular biology. Once these
analysis have been completed the particular condition found
will then be treated by the appropriate techniques, products
and procedures.
SOCIAL IMPACT OF BAD BREATH
An extremely high psychological and social impact is caused
by bad breath disorders.
Sufferers are frequently well aware and conscious of the reaction
that their condition causes on others. Actions and body language,
for example, people opening windows, people trying discreetly
to hold their noses, moving away, making excuses for not having
to talk at close quarters etc. are all typical ways as to
how people try to avoid and protect themselves against the
bad smell.
Halitosis can produce low self-esteem, social phobias, depression,
loneliness and even anger and further deep seated psychological
problems.
Comments and declarations such as “It ruins my life”,
“I sleep separately from my husband” or “It’s
like having cancer” , “I don’t want to leave
my house” are all too common.
Clinical experience has proven that patients affected with
halitosis have more difficulties in making and maintaining
friendships and relationships, getting married or in gaining
self-confidence, furthermore professional development in their
careers is often seriously stunted.

HALITOSIS + LONELYNESS = DEPRESSION
Based on statistical information obtained from a survey of
dental clinics, there are three main reasons for making dental
appointments.
1- Strong Pain
2- Cavities (whereby fillings are required)
3- Halitosis.
Treatment for the last item, until recently, has generally
been ignored. The main reason for this is because cures were
either unknown or were not made available, or because they
were not considered important enough as there is no physical
pain and also because it is not a condition by which you can
die from!
In order to cure bad breath professional assistance is essential.
Stadistics:To some extent,
25% of world’s population suffers from bad breath (halitosis).
Problems range from the intermittent, circumstantial, through
to acute and chronic disorders.
Extrinsic Causes: These
are mainly due to tobacco, alcohol and certain foodstuffs
such as dairy products e.g. milk, cheese, yogurt, onions,
garlic etc.
Intrinsic causes:: These
are mainly due to oral or systemic (corporal) conditions.
90% of these halitosis conditions originate in the mouth (oral
cavity), the rest (10%) are systemic. We pay attention to
both of these areas. In our Prodental clinics we work as an
integrated team so that we can arrive at a definitive diagnosis
and treat the particular condition found, correctly and comprehensively.
We use methods including mass spectrometry and gas chromatography.
Using these we can identify the various volatile sulfur compounds
(VSC’s) which are the principle products of anaerobic
bacteria, found in mouths, which causes Halitosis.
The intensity of bad breath is directly related to the increase
of intra-oral levels of these volatile sulfur compounds (VSC’s).
In addition to VSC’s other components are studied and
treated, such as indol, escatol, carboxilic acid, short chains
such as butyric acid, amonias and polyamides including putrecine
and cadaverine. The substrates include aminoacids: arginine,
metionine, lysine.
Our in vitro scientific studies show that the anaerobic organisms
are the cause of bad odors when they consume aminoacids that
can be present in the gums, cavities, tongue, in the mucus
at the back of the throat and also in post nasal dripping.
After their “ one second” digestion these organisms
liberate volatile sulfur compounds responsible for bad breath
(these can smell like rotten eggs, dirty socks or even like
feces).
The tongue acts like a very large rug, allowing bacteria
to adhere to it and so providing the ideal environment for
producing and liberating these bad odors.

TREATMENT:
Our treatments are carried out by chemical and/or by mechanical
methods. When the diagnosis is for chronic halitosis the patient
must use, on a daily basis a complete Kit. This comprises a
mouth rinse, spray, gel , special toothpaste with an active
ingredient. Some kits will contain active O2 (oxygen). If the
halimeter measurement is high “ found to be over 1000
parts per million and depending on the level of VSC’s
patients”; We will use the complete kit using O3 (ozone)
as the main ingredient, with zinc salts or a probiotic treatment.
At Prodental we focus on reducing the anaerobic bacteria to
a healthy level that will not produce bad breath, soon we will
be treating our patients with chlorine dioxide. (Note that certain
levels of these bacteria are maintained as they are necessary
to protect us from other bacterial diseases and also to help
digest some proteins).
There are 32 different possible diagnoses for causes due to
the oral cavity (mouth), hence we have 32 distinct treatments.
The one explained briefly above is the most common one for diagnosis
of chronic halitosis.
All the 32 distinct treatments that we implement employ the
use of what we call the “intelligent” tongue scraper.
The design of this scraper was developed after a four year study
of 1500 cast tridimentional models of different types of tongues,
spanning from examples from people of ages from 7 to 70. The
form of this intelligent scraper adapts perfectly to the topography,
shape and anatomy of all types of tongues and specially the
toungues cente line groove called the sulcus.

Due to our renowned clinical experience in this specialist field,
we have achieved a very high success rate respect to our treatments
and great satisfaction all round amongst thousands of our patients.
Deposit for gel (quimical control). The toothbrushes and flosses will not be examined at this occasion.
